  • Why do I need to clean my ducts?

Dust, dirt, pollen, mildew, mold, bacteria, and smoke are pulled into your duct system every time your furnace or air conditioner operates. These airborne contaminants build up inside the ductwork over time and are spewed out and circulated throughout your home, continually affecting the health and comfort of your family. As a result, there may be an increase in viruses and breathing problems for your family.

The state-of-the-art, Air Care HVAC contaminant removal system used by Blodgett's Cleaners assures that your ducts are being cleaned in the most effective way. We've found that it's 99.7% efficient in removing microbial contaminants. This system enables our technicians to thoroughly clean your entire duct system with minimal disruption. • How often should residential HVAC systems be cleaned?

The EPA recommends that you shouldn't clean your HVAC system periodically, but on an “as needed” basis, and Blodgett's Cleaners certainly agrees. We've found that the frequency of cleaning may depend on several factors, one of which is the preference of the homeowner.

Some factors of influence while considering more frequent cleanings are: smokers, intensive cooking, high occupancy/traffic, childcare activities in the household, pets that shed lots of dander, or nearby construction projects. However, you can rest assured that nothing will make your system last longer and run cleaner than a properly sized air filter installed carefully by professionals. We've found the best way to keep it clean is to make sure there's no airflow bypass around the air filter framing and to change your filter every three months. • What causes a clogged dryer vent?

We've found that a clogged dryer vent is caused by the buildup of lint in the dryer ventilation system. There are many reasons why this can happen. First, the complex construction of new homes built today tends to have dryers located away from an outside wall. This means dryers tend to be vented longer distances, creating more bends in the vent through the home. The additional length creates more places for lint to collect or for animals and birds to hide.

Secondly, dryer vents are often made from flexible plastic or foil ducts, which may be easily kinked or crushed where they exit the dryer and enter the wall or floor. Ducts made of this material are more likely to sag and let lint build up at low points than ridge metal or UL-approved flexible metal ducts. Poorly connected internal ducts can also trap lint.

Screens or cages at the duct termination are helpful to prevent animals from getting into the exhaust from the outside, but if they aren't properly cleaned and maintained they can also become clogged and restrict airflow. • What is a level one chimney inspection?

We've found that a level one inspection is the most common type of inspection and is what's included with your chimney sweep service. Chimney cleaning with a basic level one inspection doesn’t involve any special equipment or inspections of concealed areas. This type of chimney service will include using a flashlight to look over all exposed areas of your chimney, crown, firebox, and damper. If any areas are of concern, the technician will notify you and suggest a level two inspection. Call Blodgett's Cleaners today and get started with a free estimate on your inspection!

  • What is a chimney fire?

This is a fire that ignites within the chimney flue or firebox. This hazard can be avoided by investing in a chimney cleaner to periodically inspect and clean your chimney. Call Blodgett's Cleaners today to get started with a free estimate!

  • What causes chimney fires?

Our experts have found that a chimney fire can start from excessive creosote build-up or burning excessively hot fires. Please be advised that wood fires should only be burned in masonry fireplaces or wood-burning stoves. • How can I prevent a chimney fire?

When purchasing a home in Southern California, our experts have found that a common buyer’s prerequisite is a fireplace. A fireplace usually isn't needed to furnish heat but rather to supply the warm ambiance of a crackling fire. After all, there's something about a fire that has a soothing effect on the soul!

As the fire burns, deposits from the fuel (we've found wood is most common in Southern California) collect on the back wall of the fireplace and the flue (the pipe that carries the smoke out). This is your basic soot – dull, dusty, and black. Our cleaners have found that after about one cord of wood or three to four years of occasional use, the soot needs to be removed.

When the soot is allowed to build up, a concentrated form of unborn fuel is created called creosote. This stuff is nasty. When looked at with a flashlight, it is greasy and shiny looking. Creosote causes chimney fires, but a professional chimney sweep can remove it. According to the Building Safety Journal, approximately 14,000 chimney and vent fires still occur annually in the United States, but they can be avoided by investing in a chimney cleaner.

According to our experts, a chimney fire burns up to 2,000 degrees once it gets started. When a fire starts, the structure of the fireplace and flue act as a blast furnace, and they literally rumble, shake, and howl as if a freight train has come to visit at full speed. All the while, the top of the flue sports a flame spewing red-hot creosote on the roof. This, by the way, is a little rough on shake shingle roofs, creating a fire much larger than you had intended. Avoid this trouble by reaching out to Blodgett's Cleaners to keep your chimney safe!
